Role Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join us as Technical Feed Mill & Quality Support Manager responsible for supporting the Westway sales team in establishing value propositions of liquid feed mill products. Providing individual and group training of technical knowledge in liquid feed mill products and feed mill management to the Westway sales team and customers. Providing leadership in the selling process and participation in the development and research of current and new value-added products that help support our growth strategy. Providing necessary technical support to feed mill customers and vendors as needed. Becoming familiar with the Westway feed manufacturing processes by working closely with quality and laboratory services and familiarizing with all Westway plants.

Business Overview

Westway Feed Products is North America’s largest manufacturer of liquid supplements for livestock. Additionally, we produce feed mill products, dried molasses and industrial products. The core concept of Westway’s business is to utilize co-products from other industries and convert them into safe, high-quality, cost effective, livestock feed supplements. While Westway’s primary ingredient for many of our products is molasses, we also incorporate other co-products. The concept of utilizing these co-products is the foundation of our sustainability platform. Today, Westway operates 22 production facilities across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Our geographic reach allows for products to be developed according to environmental and production system variations across the country.

We are part of ED&F Man Commodities, a world leading trader of agricultural products including coffee, sugar, molasses and animal feed.

This role will require up to 60% maximum travel to support the Westway field sales team with customers across North America & Canada.

Key Accountabilities

Technical support for the Westway sales team in the sales of feed mill products (60%).

  • Work with Westway’s feed mill strategy lead to support the developed strategy and support the achievement of our 2029 gross margin growth targets.
  • Provide technical feed mill training for individuals and group situations to support the value of liquid feed mill products manufactured by Westway.
  • Learn and become proficient in necessary software and procedures that are required to formulate, manufacture and price products.
  • Regularly schedule time with the Westway feed mill sales team to maintain good working relationships, reinforce the value of conducting business with Westway and continue building a portfolio of business for Westway.
  • Provide product and ingredient expertise in the areas of feed mill manufacturing, in order to increase the sales of Westway products through relationships, technical knowledge and providing information as a valued resource to customers.
  • Assist customers and independent consultants with liquid feed mill management information and technical information on molasses based liquid feed mill products as well as the value of liquid by-products. Assist customers with feed mill management and manufacturing expertise.
  • Work with and be a resource for the operations, nutrition and formulations, and regional sales manager by providing new ideas from the field on product development, opportunities in feed mill, market competition, changes in the market, and customer attitudes.
  • Be involved in local and state feed mill organizations. Represent Westway at local, state, prominent feed mill and feed associations and conferences throughout the feed industry.
  • Actively participate in professional and personal training locally and corporately to enhance professional and personal growth.
  • Attend and support technical nutrition team events, functions and initiatives.
  • Maintain professional status by attending professional meetings and conferences. Maintain a satisfactory level of competency for accepted and innovative industry practices by attending company approved meetings and seminars; and by reading pertinent information in professional journals, field day reports, specialized industry publications and popular press.

Support of the quality department (40%)

  • Work and train with the senior quality manager, regulatory affairs and laboratory services, food safety compliance manager and laboratory supervisor to provide support for the quality department in the future.
  • Become familiar with all Westway liquid manufacturing plants across the US and Canada.
  • Become fully knowledgeable of liquid feed ingredients, their values, the manufacturing specifications necessary to formulate and blend liquid ingredients to make quality liquid feed and feed mill products.
  • Realize an understanding of liquid concepts and chemistry.
  • Become familiar with feed licenses and registrations across the US and Canada.
  • Become familiar with our Safe Feed and Safe Food program.
  • Develop an understanding of laboratory processes and purposes to support quality product monitoring and manufacturing.

Skills and Experience

  • PHD in feed manufacturing or animal nutrition preferred OR master of science in animal nutrition or feed mill science with substantial feed mill manufacturing and management experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of feed mill and animal feed industry trends.
  • Ability to research and analyse the market, industry and customers and to apply that information to manage accounts and increase sales.
  • Ability to understand and apply basic mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to incorporate favourable terms for the company into negotiations.
  • Ability to read, analyse and interpret general business and professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, and financial reports.
  • Ability to effectively present information, communicate effectively with, and respond to questions and complaints from co-workers, management, and customers.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedures.
  • Ability to interact with others in a professional and appropriate manner and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and customers.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems and ability to interpret a variety of instructions, policies and data.
  • High motivation level with the ability to perform work with considerable independence under the general direction of supervisor. Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions independently.
