Role Overview

We have an exciting new opportunity and currently seeking for a Post-Fixture Assistant based in Mumbai. The successful candidate will be the first-response handler for all operational matters alongside our chartering and operations colleagues in our global offices. The position will suit someone with a keen interest in operating dry bulk vessels mainly on voyage charters. This is an elaborate and multi-faceted role and we are currently looking for a credible, adaptable and creative individual.

Established in 1783, ED&F Man is an employee-owned agricultural commodities merchant with 5,500 people in 50 countries and annual revenue in excess of $8bn. We trade sugar, coffee, molasses, animal feed and pulses.  Corporate responsibility is ingrained in our culture. We source or process raw, white and specialty sugars from over 40 producing countries. We sell to refineries, industrial users, wholesalers, retailers and consumers, offering local solutions though a number of in-country purchasing, sales and distribution businesses.

Key Accountabilities

  • Monitor and assist with vessel’s movement from origin to destination during voyage execution maintaining a daily position list
  • Constant communication with nominated agents, ship owners, ship brokers and all parties involved for each fixture
  • Observe loading and discharge contractual deadlines while keeping record of any irregular activities/events at each port of call
  • Proactively identify and flag any issues of concern whilst resolving on the spot or suggesting solutions wherever possible and/or escalating to higher management whenever necessary
  • Detail oriented with sound understanding of Dry Cargo Charter Parties – Sugar 99 (NYPE etc) and vessel operations ensuring vessels perform in line with terms and conditions of the Charter
  • Coordinating the release of Bill(s) of Lading, execution of LOI(s), and all relevant documentation re: switching of Bill(s) of Lading whenever necessary
  • Producing and analysing laytime, despatch and demurrage statements with vessel owners and contractual counterparties focused on maximising savings for the company
  • Liaising to commercial team and report any active disputes and/or expected exposures
  • Negotiating with clients on any disputes or discrepancies to resolve them amicably gathering all required evidence
  • Review complex laytime computations and support commercial team in the event of any disputes
  • Maintaining accurate records of all shipping activities and expenditures
  • Handling invoicing and billing related to the post fixture process whilst reviewing & approving final freight accounts
  • Preparing working copies and addendums in line with the recap and main terms agreed subject to Chartering desk approval
  • Providing all supporting material to legal team when a dispute cannot be settled amicably
  • Collaborating with (international) shipping legal bodies and proactively defending company’s position

Working as a member of the wider operations team for the Sugar Business Unit to provide input on various projects and continuous process improvement

Skills and Experience

  • Diploma/Degree in Maritime Studies, Shipping Management, Marine Policy, Maritime Law, or a related field
  • Previous experience in a similar role in Dry-Bulk Shipping gained within a busy, commercial environment is preferred but even candidates with little or no experience are welcome to apply for whom training will be provided
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication & interpersonal skills
  • Energetic, self-motivated with strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Effective problem solver and strong negotiation skills
  • Ability to take ownership and responsibility
  • Proactive and positive attitude, looking to continuously improve and evolve
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural work environment among global offices
  • Flexible team player, willing to take on new responsibilities as and when required
  • Conversant in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook
  • Willing and able to work long hours or outside office hours when required to accomplish designated tasks
  • The candidate needs to reside in or near Mumbai
