We have a challenging and substantive opportunity for someone to join us as our Group Head of Tax/International Tax Director to work in a truly global environment leading a high performance team to establish, maintain and evolve tax efficient processes, policies and structures are in place to optimize tax rates by jurisdiction and overall, within the context of compliance with relevant international tax laws and relevant group policies; provide analysis, reporting, risk management, policy and guidance in respect of all tax matters for the group, including transfer pricing, holding company structures and domicile jurisdictions; manage tax audits; and ensure all tax operations are cost-efficient and effective. The role is accountable for the independent provision of reports, advice and remedial actions to Management and to the board and will play the primary role in optimising the effective tax rate for the group while protecting the company from tax risks and developing appropriate actions as tax-laws continue to evolve.

The role could be based from our London, Zurich or Amsterdam offices and provides long term potential within the challenging and fast‐paced soft commodities industry.


  • Define the group’s tax strategy, standards and policies, including entity ownership structures and jurisdictions for holding companies. Ensure a clear, comprehensive Transfer Pricing Policy is in place and updated at least annually, and when legislative changes require
    Work with the business units to review and advise on trading deal proposals, and ensure compliance with law and group transfer pricing policy in respect of trading flows and entity capital structures
  • Work with accounting, treasury and legal functions to review and advise on capital structure transactions and funds flows, including dividends, loan interest, equity and debt holdings etc. and ensure compliance with law and group policies
  • Advise the Board and business executives on optimal tax structures for material transactions and business changes, and ensure appropriate implementation as approved by the relevant decision making or governance authority
  • Manage the end-to-end process for tax audits and enquiries by tax authorities, including preparation and submission of responses on behalf of the group. Work with Legal as appropriate to ensure protection of the group’s position
  • Identify and report on non-compliance and other tax risks (e.g. changes to tax law or rates) for the group across all jurisdictions; direct internal actions to ensure appropriate mitigation, management and response measures are in place; assure delivery of these actions through action tracking and verification
  • Prepare the tax calculations for investment, divestment, project business cases and report on effective tax rates in post-transaction reviews
  • Manage and ensure the full and final resolution of legacy and restructuring-related tax issues; set clear resolution objectives and direct internal and external actions to ensure their achievement, with appropriate governance including risk mitigation, process management and progress tracking in place
  • Measure and report on the cost-benefit analysis of tax-efficient structures; ensure the relevant conclusion (“wind-up” or other mechanisms as applicable) of marginal structures where appropriate
  • Develop a high-performance, high wellbeing team culture within the tax function, leading to growth, retention, and reputation for delivery for our key financial stakeholders

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Substantial experience as a senior corporate tax practitioner in a multinational, including director level or above in tax for a multinational trading or banking, finance group, or a top-tier accounting firm’s tax practice
  • Expert knowledge of complex trading businesses and associated tax issues, areas of opportunity, exposure, or weakness
    Expert knowledge of key tax laws and principles, particularly relating to transfer pricing, tax assets and thin capitalisation, with
  • international jurisdiction knowledge and expertise
  • Qualified Accountant (ACCA, CIMA, CPA) and certified tax professional – e.g. ATT, CTA
  • Additional relevant qualifications an advantage – e.g. Post-graduate qualifications in tax law, etc.
  • Objective, impartial and independent, with a personal strength of character that assures compliance with tax laws and group policy
  • Strong knowledge of tax process best practices – able to advise the group on specific, tangible actions to improve tax governance, processes, controls and systems, including in respect of “making tax digital” initiatives by multiple tax authorities worldwide
  • Diplomatic, professional, and persuasive, with gravitas and credibility at board level; exceptional presentation, verbal and written communication skills
  • Expert knowledge of external tax audit processes and the appropriate interactions with tax authorities
  • Ability to work in a dynamic multinational environment under tight timelines
  • Effective people leader, with significant change leadership experience
  • Proven ability in establishing enduring and effective relationships with key business and financial stakeholders – board, senior executive colleagues
