Assistant Operations Manager (Rwenzories) – Uganda

With a growing business in Uganda we are looking for talented individuals with existing knowledge of the agri-commodities sector to become part of our commercial team.

The specific requirement is for an Assistant General Manager to work alongside our General Manager supporting the day to day running and on-going strategic development of our business. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about the coffee business and how to lead and run a business.  

Main Responsibilities: 

The Assistant Operations Manager, based in Western Uganda in the Rwenzories Region, will be responsible for supporting operations across our Western Uganda set up.  This role will work very closely with and support our partner in this region. 

Main responsibilities, including but not limited to, would be as follows:   

  • Based full time in the Rwenzories region during season, the Assistant Operations Manager would support across all day to day operational activities.
  • Supporting the Senior Management team at both Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd. and Agri Evolve the role will be involved in tasks such as processing, quality and overseeing general activities from field to factory.
  • The role will also be responsible for reviewing and ensuring efficient and safe logistics are in place for the transportation of coffee from field sites to the main Rwenzories processing unit.  
  • During Season, The role will be required to report on a weekly basis to Management on activities including but not limited to incoming volumes, predicted volumes, quality, areas of risk or concerns, competitor updates etc.
  • This role will be involved in the establishment of new sites in the Rwenzories region to ensure timely and efficient execution and set up of processes.
  • The role will work closely with all functions in this region including production, quality, sustainability and finance.
  • Longer term, this role will be involved in supporting the development of practical tasks and systems across the organisation to improve efficiencies and controls across the supply chain.
  • During periods of off season, the role would support across the main Kyagalanyi Operations assisting functions as and where necessary including commercial, logistics, production and quality.

  Person Specification: 

  • Degree level qualification within a relevant field of study, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience within the Coffee industry within a similar role at a similar level of seniority.
  • Experience in setting up new processing sites and experience in managing processes across an entire supply chain.
  • Experience gained from working in a field based role within the coffee industry.
  • Experience in managing and implementing robust and practical internal controls and monitoring systems across the internal supply chain.
  • Experience in managing financial budgets and cost control initiatives.
  • Customer focused with a passion for ensuring customer satisfaction for existing relationships as well as seeking to expand the market and initiate new business.
  • Experience of logistics, warehouse operations & quality control: an ability to work across all of these areas improving procedures, personnel capacity, taking full responsibility for outcomes for selected areas
  • Excellent communication skills and a can do attitude
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity to different attitudes and behaviours
  • Robust resilient character with the ability to work autonomously and confidently.
